Did you know that the 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 was one of the most powerful muscle cars built in the 1964-1974 era? This car had the highest torque rating of any muscle car built, a whopping 510 ft lbs at only 2800 RPMs. Perhaps this is why there have been more than several “Hemi verses Stage 1 ” races over the last 25 years. Both cars are pretty scarce items. I remember back in the 1970s you almost never saw a factory Hemi car out on the street, at cruises, or even the dragstrip. This is because there were only about 8000 Hemi cars built between 1966 and 1971. And, Buick Stage 1 cars were even rarer — only 2800 built in 1970 and far fewer in the other years. This explains the general lack of knowledge of these cars. They weren’t overlooked because they just weren’t there! The buyers back then who bought these cars didn’t want to be the owner of just another Chevelle or Roadrunner and usually had a little more money than their neighbors. And, of course this “country club” set never came near a dragstrip. However, with all of the races against Hemis, the Pure Stock races, the F.A.S.T. series races over the last 10-25 years, the GS Stage 1 usually being at or very near the top of the heap, a GS Stage 1 has become a very-sought after automobile. Fast with class, ultra-rare, and neck-snapping torque unlike anything you have experienced before, the Buick GS was the muscle car of choice for the person who wanted speed AND luxury.
